Get Behind the Bamboo Curtain

David Mitchell, broadcaster (Potting Shed, BBC Radio Scotland), lecturer and curator at the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, will recount the extraordinary

history of Western Plant Collectors in China and the vicinity of Manchuria on Friday 26th March at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, 7.30pm.

In this rare and fascinating illustrated talk, David will examine the lives and recount the adventures of the intrepid individuals who went plant hunting and the botanists they worked with. You'll discover the roles the Russians, Italians, Americans and the British (especially the Scots) played and learn what happened to them as they explored this vast region, so rich in biodiversity. You'll also hear about the plants they discovered and the huge numbers of specimens they brought home.

Did you know that 30% of our garden plants, like clematis, lilies and primulas, originated from China? And do you know who discovered and introduced those sumptuous magnolias, sweet scented buddleia and other exotic shrubs into the UK?

Make sure you get a ticket (£7.50) to this botanical event by calling PFT's box office on 01796 484626 or buy online!

History

From 1951 to the 21st Century...

Discover our history "When staying in Pitlochry during the early part of the war, I chanced to see a stately house with a fairly large garden, quite close to the town. I at once realised that here my dream theatre might well be established in this fashionable resort right in the heart of Scotland"… John Stewart, Founder of Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
