| Bridie's Dr.Angelus - the final play to open this Summer |
|
1951 saw not just the birth of Pitlochry Festival Theatre but also the death of one of the founding fathers of the modern Scottish theatre: James Bridie. To mark this double anniversary, the final (sixth) show to join the 2011 Summer rep will be Bridie's Dr. Angelus. Part psychological thriller, part pitch black comedy, this dark tale (directed by Perth based Ken Alexander) of a deadly Glasgow GP is a late masterpiece by the most often performed playwright in PFT's history.
Glasgow, 1920: Dr. Johnson - earnest, English, newly-graduated - seems to have fallen on his feet when he is invited to join the Glasgow practice of the esteemed if somewhat eccentric Dr. Angelus. With a steady flow of patients and the constant guidance of his philosophizing new mentor, Johnson's future looks positively rosy.

"When staying in Pitlochry during the early part of the war, I chanced to see a stately house with a fairly large garden, quite close to the town. I at once realised that here my dream theatre might well be established in this fashionable resort right in the heart of Scotland"… John Stewart, Founder of Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
