Scotland has produced some of the most successful Plant Hunters in the world because they were backed by the great botanic gardens of Edinburgh and Kew, the Royal Horticultural Society as well as nursery gardens and wealthy collectors. There was also the advantage of the Empire, with its established trade routes, contacts and wealth of resources. Yet these very individuals who contributed so much to our modern gardens, and daily lives are relatively unsung heroes. Although several of them may be known to botanists, horticulturists and keen gardeners few people will have heard of the names of George Forrest, Francis Mason, David Douglas. Yet these men changed the world and affect your life to this day.
